Men’s Rams Basketball Place 4th at National Tournament
By Ryan Schaal
Anoka-Ramsey’s men’s basketball team played in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament, coming in as the #1 overall seed over the weekend of March 16-18 in Rochester, Minnesota.
Anoka-Ramsey played Massbay Community College (Massachusetts) in their first game. They were leading by as many as 20, but Massbay fought back to make it a close game. The Rams finally pulled ahead for good in the second half and came out with a 98-87 victory to put them in the semifinals of the tournament.
The next game was played against a tough-fighting North Lakes team from Irving, Texas. The Rams fell behind early and didn’t score a point in the first six minutes of the game. They fell behind 33-19 at the half but, that didn’t put them down at all. The Rams have been fighters all year and this game was no different.
Kevin Schramm posted a double-double with 16 points and eleven rebounds, while Malik Williams had 6 points, eleven rebounds, and five assists. The Rams fought back in the second half and came back to go up one point, 54-53 with 1:30 left. North Lakes then hit a three on the next possession and the Rams fell 56-54 as their desperation shot got blocked at the buzzer. North Lakes would then go on to win the championship with their stifling defense.
In the third/fourth place game, the Rams faced a tough Herkimer (New York) opponent. They came all the way from New York. They topped the Rams 89-76. The Rams pulled ahead 23-9 early in the game, but were only ahead 42-41 at the half. Herkimer would eventually begin to pull away and win the game to claim 3rd in the National Tournament.
Even though the Rams didn’t take first place, the students, faculty, and staff can be proud of the team’s success overall this year.
